Alternative Strategies for the Control of Flatheaded Root-Borer (Capnodis tenebrionis)

May 12, 2026

The BioControl Demo & Training Day: Managing Capnodis tenebrionis using Beauveria bassiana is organised to demonstrate and promote innovative biological control solutions based on entomopathogenic fungi. The event supports the objectives of the AdvisoryNetPEST project by sharing practical knowledge, encouraging sustainable pest management, and promoting environmentally friendly approaches among advisors, farmers, researchers, and other stakeholders.

This BioControl Demo & Training Day focuses on a novel microbial preparation based on the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana. The spores of the fungus penetrate the body of Capnodis tenebrionis larvae, leading to their death and contributing to effective pest suppression. The use of Beauveria bassiana is presented within the wider framework of integrated pest management, where biological control is combined with careful monitoring and appropriate timing of application. This approach allows farmers to reduce reliance on chemical preparations while improving the effectiveness of weevil control in a manner consistent with sustainable agriculture.

The event programme combines knowledge sharing with practical learning. Participants will attend a presentation on the novel approach, followed by a training session and a presentation of other good practices relevant to sustainable pest management. A field demonstration will show the application of Beauveria bassiana under real farming conditions, creating opportunities for group discussions and peer‑to‑peer exchange between farmers, advisors, and researchers.

The BioControl Demo & Training Day is aimed at advisors, farmers, researchers, and other stakeholders interested in innovative and sustainable solutions for managing Capnodis tenebrionis. By bringing together practice and research, the event encourages dialogue and experience sharing across the agricultural advisory community.

The event will take place on 12 May 2026 (Tuesday), starting at 10:15, at Rumen Peshev’s farm in Shishkovtsi village, Kyustendil Municipality, Bulgaria. The event is organised by NAAS, with Rumen Peshev hosting the demonstration on his farm.

As an outcome of the BioControl Demo & Training Day, participants will gain practical knowledge on the use of entomopathogenic fungi for the biological control of Capnodis tenebrionis. They will learn about sustainable and innovative pest management practices, observe field applications and demonstration results, and exchange experiences directly with researchers and advisors working in this field.

For further information or registration details, interested participants can contact Vyara Dobrevska at vyara.dobrevska@naas.government.bg.
