Spot Spraying is a method for targeted control of persistent weeds such as thistles in corn cultivation. Since thistles typically appear only in partial areas and are visually easy to detect, only the infested spots are treated instead of the entire field.
The process uses drones that fly over the field and capture images. These images are stitched together on a PC using GIS software to create an overview map where weed patches are marked. An application map is then generated with the desired herbicide dosage and transferred to the sprayer computer.
During field operations, the sprayer activates only the nozzles positioned over the marked areas. This targeted approach can reduce herbicide use by up to 89% and generate cost savings of up to 38 euros per hectare.
By applying herbicides only where they are needed, Spot Spraying provides a precise solution for weed management while supporting sustainable and cost-effective agricultural practices.
