A novel approach discussed within integrated pest management (IPM) is the use of Decision Support Systems (DSS) for aphid detection in arable crops. These tools have the potential to support earlier detection of Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus (BYDV), reduce the frequency of spray applications, and provide a more localised understanding of BYDV prevalence across the landscape.
Several implementation challenges were identified during discussions on the use of DSS tools. Advisors highlighted the need for training to ensure effective use of the systems, with some reporting that current platforms are not sufficiently user-friendly and would benefit from simplification to encourage wider adoption.
Concerns were also raised regarding the potential overuse of insecticides if aphid presence is detected without confirming its link to BYDV transmission. This could result in unnecessary treatments. In addition, more on-farm data is needed to improve the accuracy of outbreak predictions and strengthen confidence in DSS-generated recommendations.
A risk-averse approach to spraying may contribute to pesticide resistance and have negative impacts on non-target species. For this reason, DSS tools should not be used as the sole basis for decision-making. Physical crop monitoring remains an important component of effective pest management strategies.
To support adoption of this approach, field visits were recommended as a practical way to demonstrate the use of DSS in commercial farming conditions. These visits could also showcase the performance of BYDV-tolerant crop varieties when used alongside Decision Support Systems, helping farmers and advisors better understand the benefits and limitations of the technology.
