The AdvisoryNetPEST project hosted a dedicated session at the scenic Herdade dos Grous on 26 February 2025, focusing on the role of grazing as a sustainable strategy for vineyard cover crop management.
The morning began with a warm welcome to participants, setting the stage for an informative and collaborative day. Beatriz Cardoso from CONSULAI opened the proceedings with an overview of the AdvisoryNetPEST project, outlining its objectives to promote innovation and reduce pesticide use in agriculture.
One of the highlights of the event was the presentation by Luís Constantino from Herdade dos Grous, titled “Grazing as a Strategy for Vineyard Cover Crop Management”. His talk explored the integration of grazing animals into vineyard management systems as a means to control cover crops, enhance soil health, and reduce reliance on chemical herbicides.
A lively discussion session followed, where participants identified and evaluated novel approaches to pesticide use and risk reduction. Ideas ranged from biological controls and mechanical innovations to improvements in plant and soil health.
The day also included a field visit, giving attendees the opportunity to see the grazing strategy in action within the vineyard. Observing real-world applications sparked valuable conversations about the adaptability of such techniques to different vineyard contexts.
The event concluded with a networking lunch, allowing participants to share experiences, exchange knowledge, and build connections for future collaboration.
By combining expert presentations, open dialogue, and hands-on observation, the meeting reinforced the potential of grazing as a viable, eco-friendly solution for vineyard management—aligning with AdvisoryNetPEST’s mission to foster sustainable agricultural practices.
