Training and Demo Event in Italy: Agroecology Day – Connecting Advisors with Agroecological Innovations

June 11, 2026

AdvisoryNetPEST participated in Agroecology Day, an annual event organised by the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies and the University of Pisa at their experimental facilities in San Piero a Grado, Italy, on 5 June.

The event is designed to connect experts, stakeholders and younger audiences with the world of agroecology, creating a dynamic space for sharing knowledge and practical experience. Within this context, AdvisoryNetPEST engaged with a broad network of advisors and participants interested in innovative approaches demonstrated directly in the field.

A platform for exchange and collaboration

Agroecology Day provided an ideal framework for presenting the AdvisoryNetPEST project to an audience already active in advisory services, research and agricultural practice. The strong interest in field-based innovation allowed for meaningful exchanges on how novel approaches can be transferred into real farming contexts.

The event brought together advisors, researchers, students, farmers and other stakeholders, fostering dialogue across different levels of the agricultural sector.

Focus on innovative cropping systems

A key topic presented during the event was a novel approach based on permanent living mulches and strip tillage, used as cornerstones for integrating organic and conservative agriculture in mediterranean cereal-based cropping systems controlling weeds and shifting weed community composition.

Demonstrated directly in the experimental fields, this approach illustrated how agroecological practices can support weed control while contributing to the adaptation of cropping systems to environmental and climate pressures.

Learning through field experience

The programme combined farm demonstrations, field visits, presentations and group discussions, allowing participants to engage with both the technical and practical aspects of agroecological solutions.

Participants explored experimental plots where permanent living mulches and strip tillage are applied, gaining insights into their performance in real conditions. Discussions also addressed the real costs and opportunities of diversifying production systems, as well as practical strategies for improving weed management and climate resilience.

Strengthening advisory networks

By participating in Agroecology Day, AdvisoryNetPEST strengthened its connection with advisors and stakeholders who play a key role in supporting innovation uptake in agriculture.

The event highlighted the importance of peer exchange and field-based learning in accelerating the adoption of sustainable practices across Europe. It also reinforced the relevance of advisory networks in bridging research and practice.

Advancing agroecology in Europe

Overall, Agroecology Day demonstrated how collaborative events can support the transition towards more sustainable agricultural systems. AdvisoryNetPEST’s participation contributed to promoting practical agroecological solutions and encouraging dialogue on their implementation in different farming contexts.
