The Active Ingredient Detector (AcID) project is developing an innovative sensor system for the real-time detection of plant protection substances in greenhouse crops. The aim is to improve the effectiveness of spraying practices while reducing potential impacts on human health and the environment.
The system is based on advanced micro- and nanotechnology sensors and is integrated into the gaiasense smart farming platform, which provides comprehensive monitoring of crop conditions and greenhouse environments. By combining crop monitoring with the detection of plant protection substances, the system supports more informed decision-making in greenhouse production.
Pilot applications were carried out in cucumber and tomato greenhouse cultivations in Crete and Thessaloniki, providing valuable insights into the practical use of the technology under commercial growing conditions.
For farmers, the AcID system offers several potential benefits. These include the optimisation of pesticide use, reduced input costs, safer and higher-quality production, and improved compliance with environmental requirements. By enabling more precise monitoring, the technology can contribute to more efficient crop protection and support sustainable greenhouse management.
The AcID project demonstrates how advanced sensing technologies can be integrated into smart farming systems to support innovation in agriculture. As digital tools continue to evolve, real-time monitoring solutions may play an increasingly important role in improving both productivity and environmental performance in greenhouse crop production.
