Training and Demonstration Event in Germany: Offline Spot Spraying in Action

October 8, 2026

On 17 September 2026, farmers, advisors, researchers and industry representatives gathered at Burg Warberg in Lower Saxony, Germany, for the annual Practitioner’s Day. The event focused on digital farming technologies and this year’s main topic was offline spot spraying, an innovative method that can help reduce herbicide use while maintaining effective weed control.

The event was organised by Netzwerk Ackerbau Niedersachsen (NAN) e.V., the Ackerbauzentrum Niedersachsen and the Landwirtschaftskammer Niedersachsen through its PraxisLabor Digitaler Ackerbau.

What is offline spot spraying?

Traditionally, herbicides are sprayed across an entire field, even when weeds are only present in certain areas. Offline spot spraying offers a more targeted approach.

The process begins with a drone flying over a field and taking images to identify where weeds are growing. These images are then used to create a digital map showing the exact locations of weed patches. Farmers can use this map to spray only the affected areas instead of the whole field.

By applying herbicides only where they are needed, the technology has the potential to reduce pesticide use and support more sustainable farming practices.

Demonstrating the technology in the field

The day began with presentations on pesticide reduction initiatives, including the Project AdvisoryNetPEST and the regional strategy being implemented in Lower Saxony.

Participants then moved to the field to see the technology in practice.

At the first demonstration station, experts showed how drone images are transformed into a digital application map using specialised software.

The second station demonstrated how this map can be transferred to a sprayer. During the demonstration, participants also learned about one of the practical challenges of using digital technologies: different systems do not always work together automatically. After making the necessary data adjustments, the map was successfully used to apply water to areas where thistles had previously been identified.

A third demonstration showcased equipment specifically designed for precise spot spraying, highlighting how newer technologies can make the process more efficient and user-friendly.

Discussions on effective weed control

An important topic during the event was how to ensure that herbicides remain effective when applied only to specific areas.

Participants discussed the need for accurate application, as using too little product could increase the risk of weeds developing resistance to herbicides. Experts exchanged views on the technical factors that help ensure successful treatments, including nozzle selection and spraying techniques.

Bringing stakeholders together

Beyond the demonstrations, the event provided an opportunity for farmers, advisors, researchers and industry representatives to exchange experiences and discuss the future of sustainable crop protection.

The combination of expert presentations, practical demonstrations and open discussions gave participants a better understanding of how offline spot spraying works and the role it could play in reducing pesticide use while supporting productive farming systems.
